First Day...
Sep. 22nd, 2008 10:12 pmSo today is the first day of school... It was pretty uneventful, as first days go... For the first time, my non-architecture classes just talked about the syllabus. Shocking, I know! I mean, obviously I've heard people say that's all they do on the first day, but I usually have teachers that go over the syllabus quickly 'cause they assume that OMG, you know how to read, and then go straight into a lecture for the rest of the period. But today was different.
In the morning, I had my CSC class (programming). We just went over the syllabus and yeah.. Finished in an hour and then got out early 'cause he didn't want to start on actual programming and stuff on the first day. I have to say that I'm kinda worried about that class 'cause I don't know shit about programming. Seriously... it's so sad. I think once, I programmed something onto one of those, like, little game things that kinda look like laptops or whatever.. I dunno what they're called, but yeah.. it's just like mostly games and stuff, but it came with a little manual and there were little programming things in it that you could follow to create little cutesy games or whatever. I remember doing one when I was little and just following the book, but replacing the questions with other stuff, like when's your birthday and what's your favorite color and stuff like that, and then there was some outcome that I don't remember, but yeah.. That was a long time ago and obviously I didn't even really know what I was doing 'cause I thought it was just a game or whatever.. And yeah.. So yeah.. We're doing Matlab in there and all I know about it is that there is such a thing, hahaha. I mean, seriously, the only thing I knew prior to taking the class was the fact that there is a language called Matlab. Hopefully it's not too bad, but we'll see... Also, there's just a bunch of new second years in there. I feel very awkward in that class 'cause I know I don't fit in -- most, if not all, are engineers and yeah.. I also recognize some of the people from when I took Calc 3, 'cause that was a class full of freshmen last year. x_x And yeah.. I dunno. I feel like those people might recognize me and think that I'm in the same year as them, but I'm not! x_x Also, we have to work in partners, but I dunno anyone in there. Sadness. =( I hope I don't get stuck working with some lame person...
After CSC, I just wandered around the campus, 'cause I had nothing to do for an hour. I wanted to go into the bookstore, but the line to drop off your backpacks outside were so long that I was like screw it. Wandered and looked for all my classes, then grabbed a Mustang Daily and sat around looking at it... So boring. Should have brought a book to save me from boredom. x_x
At 10:00, I had my transportation class. There was a sub who just played a DVD of the teacher going over the syllabus, since she couldn't be there for the first day. I have to say that it was the most retarded waste of an hour. I mean, seriously, we can read the syllabus ourselves -- I don't think we need the teacher to go through every single aspect of it. x_x Honestly, she could have just said to go over the syllabus, tell us the homework, and then tell us to study the syllabus 'cause there's gonna be a quiz on it in the next class period. Five minutes, tops. I dunno why she had to go over the whole thing except that maybe she wanted all of us to stay in class? But it's so retarded. She could have even emailed us to say read the syllabus, which she already put online, then we wouldn't even need to go to class, 'cause the syllabus already had the homework on it, as well as the quiz info. x_x
After class, I went back to my place and ate food and yeah.. Then later, Amanda came by and then we walked to school. Went to the Media Center to return my Steel Manual and let Amanda get it, then just hung around for a little bit, before heading over to my studio in the Dexter building. My studio is in this remote corner at the end of the building -- it's pretty sad. x_x The only good thing is that it's right by the street, so it'll be really easy to move stuff in -- not that I have a car, but yeah. You know what I mean. XP
In studio, we just went over the syllabus, then he gave us an assignment to work in groups and come up with our studio culture. Every group had to do some drawings -- luckily for us, the drawings we had to do were pretty simple. XP And yeah.. Had to come up with criteria for our studio and layout and stuff like that, and then on Wednesday, we're pinning up and presenting and choosing what we want for the class.
So for studio, we had to read an article called The Redesign of Studio Culture. I think it's really interesting, so I'm gonna dedicate the next post (after I shower) to summarizing and responding to the article. XP
