So I marathoned this show last weekend after reading the synopsis of the show because it was totally called out to me.
"Answer Me 1997 is a 2012 South Korean television series that centers on the lives of five friends in Busan, as the timeline moves back and forth between their past as 18-year-old high schoolers in 1997 and their present as 33-year-olds at their high school reunion dinner in 2012, where one couple will announce that they’re getting married. The coming-of-age drama also examines the extreme fan culture that emerged in the 1990s when first generation idol groups such as H.O.T. and Sechs Kies took center stage and K-pop was just blossoming." -- Wikipedia
Come on, doesn't that kinda tempt you a little bit? It has two of my favorite things I love reading in fic: high school and high school reunion, and there's some fannish meta mixed in there as well! And I'll tell you right now, this show does NOT disappoint! Definitely one of my favorite dramas. ♥ I guess I'll do this bullet-point style since that's the easiest way, lol. So here are the things I love about this show and why you should watch it (I'll try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible!):
- The Characters -- Usually when you watch a drama, there are always characters you dislike, but I pretty much loved everyone in this show. All the characters have such distinct personalities and the acting is just so good. It's hard to believe that most of them are new to acting. Also, I like the fact that everyone seems real. There are contrived things, like in all dramas, but the reactions to all these situations is totally believable. Definitely one of the most realistic dramas I've seen. And when the show tugs on your heartstrings, they really go all out! (I totally sobbed at anything remotely cry-worthy, LOL.) But yeah, I love how everyone is developed and no one is left out (which is so common for secondary characters).
- Nostalgia -- Most of the series takes place in 1997 and they are super authentic about it, lol. I mean, it's weird to think about 1997 being 15 years ago, but when I see some of the stuff, I get super nostalgic about it. The first episode, when they get to the past, starts off with the group playing DDR -- remember when DDR first became a thing?! (I wanna play right now, lol.) And VHS tapes! And beepers! I was too young to have a beeper back then, but it's kinda hilarious to me seeing them in action, lol. Also, Tomogachis! I remember when everyone had those and I was so jealous because my parents didn't buy me one! But yeah, there are a lot of other references that I probably didn't get (and some I did get from reading the recaps on DramaBeans), but it's all awesome.
- Family -- I love the relationship between everyone in this, especially the family aspect. There were so many moments where things could have taken a more drastic turn for the worst (you know, drama-style), especially with the family aspect, but it didn't. I loved that there weren't any villains and no one was evil or out to get each other. It just was. I loved the relationship Shi Won had with her parents and, the relationship between Yoon Jung and Tae Woong, and their relationship with Shi Won's parents as well. Family is super important to me and I just love how they all fit together.
- The Meta -- I actually liked the meta aspect of this and how fan culture is portrayed. We're all fannish people here, so it's easy to say that we can probably all relate to Shi Won in the show. I mean, I wasn't into K-pop until probably a few years ago, but I know H.O.T. was HUGE back in the day, probably equivalent to Backstreet Boys here in the US. And Shi Won is a total fangirl. ♥ She is super in love with Tony from H.O.T. and does the crazy stalker fan thing and gets into fights with other girls over their respective bands and she even writes fanfic, lol. There is a hilarious (and totally mortifying) scene where her teacher catches her trying to pass a stack of papers (of the fic she wrote!) to someone and he ends up reading the beginning of a shower sex scene aloud to the class! NGL, I was totally dying of secondhand embarrassment! (The best part had to be Tae Woong and Yoon Jung reading her fic aloud later though, lol. Especially Yoon Jung. XP)
- More Meta -- The fact that they cast Eun Ji Won as one of the students in this is awesome. (For reference, he plays the new student who has the huge porn collection.) At first I didn't know who he was, but I looked him up after watching Episode 0 and apparently he's actually one of the members of Sechs Kies (the rival boyband)! It's so hilarious that they got one of the original idols from back in the day to play a student. All his meta moments totally crack me up. XP
- Joon Hee -- Yoon Jung's best friend and pretty much my favorite character in the drama, even though he breaks my heart. ;____; The moment he admits his crush to Shi Won was one of the most powerful scenes and was so unexpected (except, you know, just as a small little side thought that I never thought would happen). I love the relationship and trust between the two of them and I was rooting for him so hard even though I knew, logically, that it would never work out (especially since I was rooting for the other party as well). Seriously, my heart! Also, serious props for Hoya's acting skillz!
- Plot Twists -- I really like the unexpected twists in the show. You start off thinking one thing, but it ends up being totally different. They do it really well in this and it definitely keeps it interesting. Unfortunately, I have to say the main relationship mystery gets kinda old by the last couple of episodes (since it's pretty obvious by then) and the ending was only slightly disappointing (because I guess I expected there to be more), but overall, it's awesome.
Anyway, this post is already way too long. Suffice to say that you definitely need to watch

DramaFever and it's also being subbed on
