2025 OTW Election Results
The Elections Committee would like to thank all of our candidates for their hard work in this year’s election. We would also like to thank our departing Board Directors, Jennifer Haynes and Zixin Zhang, for all their work during their Board terms. With that, we are pleased to present the results of the 2025 Election.
The following candidates (in alphabetical order) have been officially elected to the Board of Directors:
- Elizabeth Wiltshire
- Harlan Lieberman-Berg
The new members of the Board will formally begin their term overlap on October 1. We wish them well with their terms.
With that, the election season comes to a close. Thank you to everyone who got involved by spreading the word, asking the candidates questions, and, of course, voting! We look forward to seeing all of you again next year.

Currently: Fics, Finals & Forehands
I finally finished False Value this weekend (!!) and immediately buried myself under another stack of books, because apparently my brain only wants cosy-but-magic right now. Currently juggling Ministry of Time, What Abigail Did That Summer, Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, and The Lamplighter’s Bookshop. Secret societies and spellwork everywhere, and honestly? Not mad about it.
My soundtrack has been equally dramatic. Top track of the week? John Williams’ Theme from Superman. Peak soaring instrumental, familiar enough to wrap around you but never demanding too much attention - perfect when I’m restless but trying to focus.
(Also: NEW TAYLOR SWIFT ALBUM SOON. Brain not ready, heart even less ready.)
Meanwhile in tennis land… Cincinnati was ridiculous in the best way. Players have been dying from the heat (like 90 degrees and 60% humidity). We've had a power outage because a generator blew up from the heat. We've had matches with an almost 3-hour rain delay. We've had malfunctioning LED boards and fire alarms going off in the middle of matches.
AND WE'RE GETTING ANOTHER SINCARAZ FINAL TONIGHT
Add in the Sumter (Mattia Bellucci won! His first title in over a year!), Cancun and Todi Challengers running across wild time zones, plus Winston-Salem and Cleveland, and USO qualies kicking off this week... I've been putting my insomnia to good use - if I can't sleep, I might as well enjoy the bopbopsqueak
Oh, and we've added a new player to the harem. His name's Terence Atmane, he's French, but we won't hold it against him. He's a lefty, he's a huge server, and he's a complete fucking nerd who has an IQ of 158 and one of the largest Pokemon card collections in France. He also gave Jannik a Pikachu card for his birthday
Writing-wise, I don’t know what got into me - except maybe I do. Fic's been my safe place while my brain’s been doing the insomnia/anxiety/ADHD/depression shuffle, and suddenly three stories fell out in one week. moments we stole on begged and borrowed time (Darren loans Jannik to Juan Carlos for the night with the immortal condition “fucked out but soft”), They strike to kill and you know I will (so maybe “Killer” wasn’t just a funny nickname after all), and part 4 of the dark magic Darren AU Surface Tension, Ashes & Dust (Roland-Garros never forgets what you feed it, and Darren Cahill knows that a little too well). Honestly? Three completely different vibes, but they’ve all been keeping me tethered.
Outside of fic and tennis brain, I’ve been oscillating wildly between ( Darren with a puppy ) (good, adorable, serotonin)” and “the endless insomnia/anxiety/ADHD/depression cycle (bad, no serotonin).” This week’s plans include calling the doctor, fixing my clothing storage situation, and hopefully working up to actually leaving the house. Agoraphobia continues to be the worst doubles partner.
Feeling-wise, it’s a mix of chaos and glee and exhaustion. Sometimes everything feels like Too Much, and then fic or tennis or a kind comment reminds me there are still bright little things to hold onto.
That’s it for this week’s chaos - tune in next Monday for more books, fic, tennis, and brain gremlins.

Currently Reading - A Blend of History, Heart, and a Touch of the Uncanny
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley
A time travel novel unlike any I've read before - bureaucratic, witty, and threaded with a deeply humane look at displacement, love, and the complicated weight of history. Bradley’s writing is sharp, layered, and often quietly devastating.
The Lamplighter's Bookshop by Sophie Austin
A beautifully atmospheric historical romance set in late-Victorian York. It’s full of bookish charm, a touch of melancholy, and the promise of renewal. Perfect for curling up with when you want comfort but also a sense of place and texture.
Together, they balance each other - one pulling me into the dizzying machinery of time and empire, the other inviting me into the hush of a lamplit shop where hearts and histories can be mended.

The process is simple: join the community, and each month sign up to be partnered with a buddy, who will then choose a book from your 'to read' list. At the end of each month there will be a community post to discuss your thoughts on the book(s) you read!
However, we're putting a twist on the traditional 'pick for me' routine and each month we'll vote on what genre of book we'll be reading; now, of course this is open to personal interpretation, for example, if the genre is horror and you're not a big fan, you could go for a Goosebumps book, or even Twilight. There will be an opportunity in each voting post to ask any questions you might have.

4 things
2. Enough people mentioned bookshop.org that I finally ordered books through it when I couldn't find what I wanted from Barnes and Noble. Good experience: the correct books arrived in a reasonable timeframe, and I was able to choose my local indie bookstore.
3. Since my last post I finished A Delicate Deception (barely adequate, but it made me want to read nonfiction about the industrial revolution in Britain) and Mansfield Park (excellent all the way through). The Cautious Traveller's Guide to the Wastelands had really vivid and frightening descriptions, and I was excited about it until the end when the whole plot fell apart??? Maybe it looked fine as a plot outline, but the ending did not feel earned; sure, empires/corporations/the industrial revolution might be the *real* evil, but the book spent a long time convincingly establishing that the wastelands are in fact incredibly deadly so the conclusion just felt hollow to me.
I'm currently reading five books, most recently picking up Clear by Carys Davies.
4. I started a few Fanlore pages in July: Ship discourse and Mo Du

They have some amazing authors this year like Charlie Jane Anders, T Kingfisher, Casey McQuiston... I don't typically do panels or signings at RCCC, but I want to do author panels this year and I might go pick up a physical copy of Red, White and Royal Blue to get signed. Con is so close I don't know if I can get any other Casey McQuiston books read
* I went to the Jade District Night Market last night. 'Jade District' is a fairly recently named part of Portland. Basically, due to low rents around part of 82nd (an infamously run down part of the city) a large shopping center opened with Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and other stores. With the rising interest in things like authentic bubble tea, Vietnamese food, etc, it become a big draw and the area has become an official neighborhood with events, designs, etc. I remember people mocking the idea of calling it the Jade District to try to make that a thing, but it fucking worked.
A large chunk of the market was food carts and even outside the food cart area a chunk of the vendors were food vendors. For people without annoying allergies, like me, I assume that event is heaven. Lots of vendors, and like very market I've attended this year it's was amazingly crowded. I'm glad I went. Dunno if I'd hit it up again.
But as someone who has lived in this city a long-ass time and originally lived on 82nd, it's amazing to see.

Ten years
So, the tenth anniversary of my diagnosis with leukaemia happened earlier this week. I usually celebrate my survival on 1 October each year, but I'd wondered a few months ago about having a party in actual summer.
In the end I didn't organise anything for this weekend because I had a hockey game with Warbirds yesterday. This morning I took Nico to Clip n Climb, and this afternoon I met Rosie for a public skate and then we had ice creams in the sunshine. On my way back to my bike (locked by the rink) I ran into a couple of people and sorted out a few things relating to Kodiaks and next weekend's Draft Tournament in Biarritz.
Also the announcement has just gone out that I'm captaining one of the teams in Biarritz, and I'm off work now for nearly two weeks.
... and actually all of that adds up to a fantastic "up yours cancer, you didn't kill me", even without throwing a party.
Take it away, Elton:

so many good books so little time
Unfortunately mostly what happens is that the overdue item sits there and stares at me on the list. It's annoying, because I do in fact! want to read all of these books! and also most of the ones on the to-read shelves in the spare room. I just somehow don't. However, I've not been in much of a computer game mood in the last few days, and that's freed up some time for reading that isn't fanfic (not that there's anything wrong with that!).
Basically there is too much stuff in my life that distracts me from reading, and if only I didn't need to e.g. earn money I could finish more books. But then I wouldn't be able to go on book-buying sprees, and that would be sad.
In other news, I ordered my new mattress, just as my old one started causing me actual back issues, so good timing me. It's not due until the end of the month, and I'm very impatient.

1 Million Mandarin Chinese Works on AO3
We’re very excited to announce that AO3 now hosts more than one million 中文-普通话 國語 (Mandarin Chinese) fanworks! Mandarin Chinese is the first non-English language to pass one million fanworks, and we appreciate everyone who’s helped us reach this milestone.
AO3 hosts fanworks in a wide variety of languages: currently, the count is around 150! You can browse the Work Languages page to see more. We’re grateful that so many creators from so many backgrounds have chosen to host their fanworks on AO3, and we appreciate each and every fanwork that’s been shared.
Since many users are multilingual, we wanted to open the floor: which language(s) do you prefer to engage with in fandom? Do you read, listen to, watch, and/or create works in the same language? Is your answer the same for all the fandoms you’re part of?
Thanks to everyone who helped get us here! We look forward to seeing even more languages reach this milestone.

Movies: Superman, Kpop Demon Hunters
I'm so out of ~practice watching superhero movies, I kept getting distracted by logic. But other than that I did enjoy the superhero parts, and the Superman parts. (The romance I was neutral on.)
This is another movie where the villain had a good point somewhere in there originally but left "reasonable" behind several thousand miles ago. Yes having extremely powerful metahumans/aliens that can interfere in any conflict they like apparently without any oversight is very concerning (no matter how "human" they feel) but, uh. Excellent job making this Luthor both very evil and very scary.
(I didn't like Krypto. As a "character" he was fun but I really dislike badly trained exuberant dogs and one with superpowers is so much worse.)
A few weeks ago I organized a movie night with friends to watch Kpop Demon Hunters because I'd heard so much about it and that was a great decision. Here I didn't get distracted by logic once ^^ It was just a fun time. And the songs are very catchy, too. I've already sung one at karaoke (This is what it sounds like) and tried two of them in Beat Saber (Golden was very difficult, Soda Pop on easy was indeed easy.)
I only took a brief look at fandom/fanfic but I'm not feeling that fannish about it. (I was surprised that the common assumption seems to be
