Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Jul. 22nd, 2007 09:24 pmSo, obviously I'm not really back into blogging, but yeah.. I'll try and put more effort into posting regularly. ^_^;;
But anyway.. Yesterday, I spent the day finishing up re-reading the rest of the Half-Blooded Prince and then started the Deathly Hallows and finished that up today. So now.. thoughts.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS!
So overall, I think this was an okay-ish book. I mean, it wasn't too horrible or anything like that, but I can't say that I wasn't disappointed. I mean, obviously I was expecting some things to be focused more than the quick gloss-overs that were given, if they were even addressed at all. And the epilogue... Let's just say that was the most disappointing thing in the book and it would have been better if she just forgot about the freakin' "Nineteen Years Later" bullshit.
Firstly, I thought there were a bunch of unnecessary deaths in the book. And, of course, I didn't want some people to die, so it's like.. yeah. I was sad when Fred died 'cause he was my favorite of the Weasley twins (not sure why, but he is) and it sucked that Dobby had to die. And, of course, I didn't want Snape to die, but I was kinda expecting it, so... But at the same time, his death was totally unnecessary and that pissed me off even more so. And even killing off both Remus and Tonks, even though they just had a kid? That's lame.
Next, I would like to say that Remus and Tonks getting married is totally the lamest thing ever. No offense, since I like both Remus AND Tonks, not just them together. I mean, seriously, they got together after the Death Eaters attacked near the end of HBP and then they get married not even two weeks into the summer break. Isn't that just a tad bit fast? And plus the fact that I just don't think they were meant to be at all. I mean, when I was reading, and I got to the part where they were married, only ten pages into the book, I got mad. I was hoping against hope that Harry seeing Tonks and Remus together at the end of HBP was just a fluke, but unfortunately, things were against that. *sigh* And the chapter where Remus went to Grimmauld Place in hopes of joining Harry and them was just.. I don't know, felt out of character, in a way. I just didn't see it and I was seriously thinking that Remus was under the Imperius, but apparently he wasn't. So yeah.. I don't know. I say it was way lame.
I thought that the seventh book would focus more on Snape and Draco, but again, definitely wrong. The whole book is practically Dumbledore's biography which is interesting but at the same time, lame. I mean, I'm sure most people were invested in whether Snape was "friend or foe", but instead, we get a tiny bit of Snape in the beginning and middle, then one chapter dedicated to his memories and "motives" for being on Dumbledore's side. And that? Just sucks. I wanted more about Snape, about what he was doing and more on his motives. A few scenes showing that Snape and Lily were friends since they were kids and that he was in love with her and wants to protect Lily's child is okay, if cliche, but I wanted more on his sneaky-ness. I mean, the whole time, he was able to fool Voldemort, but we don't get much on how he was able to do that and how he was trying to keep Hogwarts safe and all that jazz. Also in that same vein, I thought that Draco would have a more prominent role in the final book, seeing as the entirety of the sixth book was about Harry obsessing over what Draco was doing. I thought that there would be more on Draco coming to terms of what HE believes in and him deciding to switch sides, but there wasn't. I mean, when they were in the Room of Requirement, he stopped Crabbe and Goyle from killing Harry, but that was about it. I dunno, pretty lame.
I feel proud of myself in recognizing the Ravenclaw diadem as the tiara in the Room of Requirement from the sixth book. Once it was mentioned, I remembered there being a crown in there from the sixth book, so at least one good thing came from rereading the whole series from the beginning. XP And, of course, there was the locket from the fifth book and the obviousness that Regulus took it. And Kreacher... That was the quickest personality change ever. I think it was like, two or three pages to change a really nasty house elf into this sweet and kind one and that was totally lame. I mean, feelings and attitudes don't change that easily and it was totally unbelievable.
I also wanted to know more about the people who were on the run. I mean, we got a taste of it when Harry and them overheard Ted, Dean, and the goblins together, but I just felt like what they were doing would be interesting to know. Or, at least, an interesting story? But yeah.. More information on what was happening elsewhere while Harry and them were camping would have been good.
Oh! Also, the Snape and Lily thing. I wouldn't have guessed that they were friends pre-Hogwarts, but that's kinda cute? I dunno. I just thought their friendship was interesting and I felt really bad for Snape. I dunno.. I wanted Lily and Snape to get together 'cause I thought that would have been sweeter.. And to know that Snape had to lose the one he loved since he was little to the guy who has been picking on him since he first stepped onto the Hogwarts Express.. That must have really sucked. And so, throughout that chapter, I had thoughts of the Severitus challenge. If you don't know what that is, it's for fics that have Snape as Harry's real dad. So yeah.. I've a few good Severitus fics, so I kinda wanted it to be true, since I like Snape and still think that James is a total bully.
Lastly, I thought that epilogue was lame. I mean, obviously to spite people, she has to make the couples offical -- Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione. That's just so wrong 'cause I hate Harry/Ginny with a passion and the only het Harry couple I would support would be Harry/Luna. So yeah.. And then, it's like, Harry and Draco don't even seem to be on very good speaking terms, with just a nod between them. At least he didn't have a named wife. And then there were the children. Just naming off children without fleshing out any of their personalities (besides Albus, which had a little more effort put into him) is totally like inventing a bunch of mary-sues. BLAHHH! I didn't want to read it at all. >O I would like to ignore the epilogue from ever happening 'cause that would make me extremely happy.
That's all I can think to say for now.. Lates.
