The other day, I read these two articles about the architecture in Inception.
The tl;dr version of the articles can be summed up by these two quotes:
I pretty much agree with the articles. I mean, I understand that each of the dream settings are probably the way they are to helps us (the viewers) keep track of the storyline, but I kind of expected a little more out of the architecture, to be honest. I don't know if my expectations were too high or something, but I feel justified in expecting more because it's a dream! You can do whatever you want! (And seriously, you want the boring stuff you see everyday? Really?)
I was reading the comments to the Hawthorne article and I kind of wanted to slap some of those people for being dumbasses, OMG. Like seriously, there was a person dissing on the article because they somehow interpreted the author of wanting "ice cream towers and giant lollipops" or some other such nonsense. I really want to comment back to them and be like, "Dude, stop trying to read and watch the Katy Perry video at the same time!" but I feel that would be too much of a douchebag move, so that comment will just stay here in my own space, LOL. I mean, the author's a freakin' architecture critic -- I'm 100% sure he's NOT talking about wanting Candyland-esque architecture! He's just saying that cityscape resembling LA isn't exactly what most people would call new or ideal.
To end this thought, have this picture. (I'm sure anyone who's familiar with UCSD probably saw it right away..)

Anyway, this brings me to another thought I was having the other day...
There isn't nearly enough fics featuring an awesome Ariadne!
The thing is, I really like Ariadne, even though she was kind of that character who just follows the main character around asking all the important questions so that the audience doesn't feel stupid. (I'm sure there's some nice fancy term for that kind of character, but I can't think of it right now, lol. But you know what I'm talking about, so it's all good.) I mean, when I describe her like that, she sounds kinda lame, but I legitimately want to like her and in my eyes, she's should be this totally badass girl who is awesome and there should be a million stories with her just like that. But I am having the hardest time finding fics Ariadne-centered fics with a characterization that I actually like! =( Maybe I'm not looking in the right places or something, I don't know..
So yeah, give me some Ariadne recs! Gen or any pairing, I don't want to be picky. Here are some recs featuring Ariadne for you in exchange! (Yes, I've already rec'd all these fics before on Simple Pleasures, but in case you missed them or whatever..) In no particular order:
To end my long-ish post that is vaguely about architecture, here's a lovely video that I'm pretty sure most of you guys haven't seen. This video started floating around about a month after Avatar came out. I remember seeing it all over my FB feed, but then again, my FB feed = 90% architecture students, so... XP General consensus says that it's "WAY BETTER THAN AVATAR!" so there's that, if you're on the fence about taking 12 minutes of your life to watch this.
FYI, comparasion to Avatar because this video is pretty much all computer generated.

P.S. Notice I am using my semi-newish icon! Based off my friend's design for the shirts we made for my club. I changed it up a bit because from the way the shirt looks because I think it looks better this way, but I like to give credit where credit is due. XP
The tl;dr version of the articles can be summed up by these two quotes:
“You can build buildings, whole cities that you can only imagine,” DiCaprio promises the architect. What does she produce? Washed-out versions of a generic Canadian city standing in for L.A., a luxury hotel that looks like every other one in the world and, towards the movie’s climax, a mountain resort she seems to have copied from a James Bond movie she remembered. -- Betsky
The movie is rightly being celebrated as a departure from Hollywood's recent reliance on sequels, movies inspired by comic books and sequels to movies inspired by comic books. I just wish its architectural imagination were half as compelling as its cinematic one. -- Hawthorne
