What I Did For Love
Aug. 17th, 2006 08:45 pmI know, I know, I said I'd talk about famous people today, but that'll have to happen another time as something else has come to my attention. XP So, today, I will be discussing the love story that is just so great and you just HAVE to read it! I hope you feel my sarcasm here.. The story in question? What I Did For Love, linked in all it's crappy lovely glory. Please note that I do NOT recommend reading this story AT ALL, so don't blame me if you read and don't like. If, however, you DO like the story, sorry for offending you, but this is my journal and I can say what I want about it the dumb story. It's not like any author owns up to it, so whatever.
Now, the first time I heard of this story was when I was in tenth grade and
aznearthdragon sent me the link after Teng sent it to her because of how "good" the story is and how much he liked it. Now, I don't trust his tastes or anything, but the raving review he gave it made me curious enough to sit through the long and crappy saga that is What I Did For Love.
aznearthdragon subjected herself to the horrors that is this story at the same time and she didn't like it either. Please note that I haven't read this story since the first time I read it and I don't intend to for this review, but my dear
aznearthdragon suffered her way through it again today, so I will be using her for references when necessary.
The basis of the storyline is something like this.. Mina Nam is dying, but before she dies, she recounts her great love story. She was in love with Eun Ji Won, a well off young man coming from a messed up family. Mina is a girl from a poor, abusive family -- think Cinderella. They met 'cause he was trying to steal her money for some reason -- yes, I just skimmed the first page 'cause I needed more details. x_x But yeah.. I don't know all that much, but
aznearthdragon just gave me a energetic summary of the whole story. It just make me remember all the lame parts of the story, haha. But basically, they were about to get married, but something comes up and Ji Won runs off to Korea with his boyfriend best friend, leaving Mina behind. Later on in the story, she goes over to Korea in search of Ji Won and finds that he's in some kinda of gang. To get close to him, she poses as a boy, joins the gang, and becomes friends with Ji Won while he questions her manliness and falls in love with boy-Mina because of Mina-ness. Stuff happens and in the end, she's dying 'cause she has a weak heart and a missing kidney ((which she gave to Ji Won since he needed a transplant)). Ji Won finishes her story (('cause of course she was writing this story)) and goes off to become a better man.
Now, my critic of this story. First off, from what I remember, the way the story was written was not all the great. I didn't like the style at all and the story leaves MUCH to be desired. I can understand how this cliche storyline may appeal to some, but for me, it just doesn't cut it. It's very unrealistic and a lot of things don't make sense. I remember that when I was done reading the story, I had a WTF is that shit moment and was left with, 'So.. uh.. what DID she do for love?' in my mind. Seriously, I don't really understand. She dressed like a guy for it? She gave him a kidney? She died for it? Even with that, the way it was written doesn't really make me feel all that deeply for this story. I mean, yeah, it's sweet and stuff, but in the same sense, it didn't leave me feeling all that great about it. I know that I could probably think of HUNDREDS of fanfics that made me feel more than What I Did For Love did for me.
I remember that during school last year, I saw Victoria reading this story at school and she gushed about how great a story it is. You can imagine what I was thinking.. But I left the comments to her short with, "I've read that before.. I don't like it" and left it at that.
Today, Kevin says to
aznearthdragon, "You wanna read a sad story?" and ends up sending her that link. She then READ it again, defiling my poor laptop. ;_; I kept trying to stop her from reading that montrosity, but she did and she hurt her brain, of course. But because of that, I had to talk about that piece of garbage fiction.
Anyway.. My verdict? BAD STORY! Don't read unless you wanna sit through crap. There's so many good fics out there that you can read, even if it's not slash or yaoi ((which happen to be the type if fics I would probably recommend since that's generally what I read)), that can totally top that in the bittersweet-ness and angst.
